Networking is the key to success

 


This lesson I learned hard way that Networking plays a vital role in achieving success

When I tried to figure out how people of moderate skills accomplish so much in life, I saw they were pretty good at networking. They always have someone in their phone-book ready to help them, advise them, have fun with them, at all hours of the day. 

Such people have someone who can get them into big companies, protect them from the police, get their kids into top-notch schools, get hospital beds during a hospital stay, and even get a Remdesivir shot.

These are some of the common problems of an average person. Now imagine how many problems a common business man or woman would have?

Is it possible for them to do and solve everything themselves? No.

Before I talk about the importance of networks in business, let’s look at our food chain. That too depends on the network or connections between species, none can survive alone. Our entire life is based on networks, then how can a business be successful without them?

So, expand your network. Keep working in this direction. Don’t wait for people to come to you, go talk and make friends. You may think that speaking for a motive is selfish.

But, selfish interests drive everything here, there’s no reason to feel bad about it. Who knows, you might help someone to. So don't load your mind with such thoughts and focus on how to have more connections?

Why people fail to build a good network?

1) They shy away from talking to strangers.

2) They underestimate themselves.

3) Their principles don’t allow them to be selfish for their business needs.

4) Their ego gets in the way.

 5) They don’t know how to value people. 

6) They don’t want to accept help from others.

7) They are afraid that they will expose their weakness.

If you fall under any of these categories, believe that you need to flush out such thoughts. 

Open your doors to everyone.


How should you expand your network if you suck at it?

1) Read good non-fiction books that preach to improve communication skills.

I recommend reading “How to Win Friends and Influence People?" 

Usually business people don’t have time to read books, but don’t worry, take this audible membership, and listen to books.

2) Criticise no one, only give constructive criticism and guide people if you have the ability.

No one likes to be criticised, not even YOU.

3) Attend business events and interact with people.

4) Make personal connexions with people outside the professional world. Allow them to enter your thought space.

5) Always stay connected with people. Never wait for people to call, surprise them, and call first. 

6) Try to help if you can.

7) Always be with people in their sad moments.


At the end, if this is not your cup of tea, then believe in your strengths, utilise it. It will take time but success will knock your doors.

Marketing is like making a girlfriend, you seldom find out what worked.

Without marketing, your amazing, well-designed product will never live the life it was meant to. There are so many marketing techniques like 5,10,15,20 marketing tricks but you can't really tell what will work for you. 

Apart from the techniques described in marketing books and millions of blogs, the most important element is whether you  have that confidence and trust in your product? You will only be able to communicate well with the customer if you yourself have that unwavering confidence in the product. Without that, everything else fails. The words you use to communicate behave like your body language, and  your words reflect the thought process.

If you don't have that confidence, then improve the product first,  and then market it. Your small efforts after that can be more effective.

After all this, comes the best marketing techniques that Google preaches you.

But I believe marketing has no rules, you can do anything to market your product. Of course, this process should have a structure which is sometimes important to follow. 

I will share some tips that I think are useful.

  • Understand the needs of your customers.

  • Communicate what problems you are solving in simple and easy to understand language.
  • Get in touch with potential customers on a regular basis.
  • Use and exploit digital platforms as if they were made for you.
  • Follow the funneling process - it sifts out the potential customers from the mass of people.
  • Emotional branding. Very promising technique as it makes people to sympathize with themselves.

Now look at some best marketing campaigns-

The Marlboro Man 



The Marlboro Man is a character that was used in the tobacco advertising campaign of Marlboro Cigarettes. It was used from 1954 to 1999. 

The Marlboro brand was first introduced in the United States in 1924 as a women's cigarette. But in the 1950s, men did not want to be seen with Marlboro as it was designed as a women's cigarette only. The company then came up with this Marlboro character. This campaign transformed Marlboro into something that was masculine. The commercials were aired on television as "he can't be a man because he doesn't smoke those cigarettes" 

The slogan "Come to Marlboro Country" promised any common man a transformation into a rough and tough cowboy man.

Sales increased to 300% within 2 years.

The Cocacola- Share a Coke campaign



First launched in 2011,this campaign was simple enough, putting common Australian names on Coke bottles. The intention was to raise brand awareness among young consumers and make Coke a topic of conversation in social circles. This was an instant success and the campaign spread to all parts of the world.

Be a Leader that matters

 


Ok, you already know it's important to be a leader so your business grows.

Let's look into the different leadership styles-



With a clear and stable mind, think about what kind of leader you are? Does it serve your purpose?

Don't let this style depend on your behaviour, e.g. some people are born autocratic and their professional world reflects that. Avoid such scenarios.

It would be good to consciously choose the leadership style based on your business situation.

Examples of leadership that you should practice

1) In a Growing company

In such scenarios, output is of utmost importance and team members need to be in their own comfortable space to be creative and come up with solutions. 

In such situations, Laissez-Faire leadership is effective as it empowers employees to make decisions to a certain extent and lets you focus on the overall functioning of the business

2) While upgrading the product

You may need to gather inputs from everyone and come to a decision or make a decision based on customer requirements. 

A democratic style followed by an autocratic style is most effective here.

3) Running a second generation business

If you are running your father's business, then the servant leadership style is effective as the employees are older and more experienced than you. 

Once you get a hand on the situation, transformational leadership is the preferred style.


4) At the beginning of your business

You can guess.

Transformational and laissez faire will be the leadership style.



You need to evaluate your business scenario frequently and consciously choose your leadership style.

Know Your Numbers




This is not an effortless task if you have a small team or run the business with one or two people. Regardless, it is essential to monitor your business performance and know all your business numbers.

 For new or small businesses, it becomes difficult as you are the one-man army managing all things from marketing, sales, finance and products. But acquiring this knowledge is worthwhile and really shows the direction your business is heading.

 Never run your business on gut instinct.

 You can measure the performance of your business by these parameters

 1) Sales revenue

The first number that should appear in your annual report is Sales Revenue. It tells you how much money you have taken in from your product or service. Monitor it with a year-to-year comparison of months, for example, compare March sales in 2021 to March sales in 2020. Product sales fluctuate throughout the year depending on various factors such as climate, festivals, school/college exams, winter/summer holidays, etc.

If you compare it to consecutive months, one month may have high sales and the other may have lower sales, which is influenced by external factors as described above and not by your low performance.

2) Net Profit Margin and Gross Profit Margin

Sales are of no use to you if you don’t calculate your profit margin. To get this number, you need to subtract your expenses from your revenue. It is the direct amount that goes into your pocket.

Gross margin shows how efficient your process is, or simply put, it shows your markup cost on the direct cost of your goods.

 It makes more sense to calculate Gross Margin if you have a variety of products in your portfolio, as each product has a different cost, and this way you can understand which product you should spend more on to increase sales.

3) Net Promoter’s Score

It is the scale of customer satisfaction with your product or service.

Every company has its own criteria to calculate it. Some companies give customers the option to give a rating from 1 to 10 or 1 to 5, and nowadays you even see three smileys to indicate the satisfaction level. Several company names came to mind as I wrote this. As a customer, I often receive calls to rate the products I consume.

As a customer, it is sometimes annoying to respond to such satisfaction surveys. As a business owner, one should use such techniques that do not irritate the customers.

But it is important to have this parameter, as it tells you the overall customer experience.

4) Converted Leads to customers per month

Converting leads into customers is a different ball game and requires planning and efficient communication with your leads. It is therefore important to measure your efforts and see how efficient you are and if you need to improve your approach to this activity.

You do a lot of little things for lead generation and invest a lot of time. Try to express this invested time in monetary terms. For example, how much time you invested for those 4 leads can be equivalent to the money you could have earned in that time. Then compare it to the customer sales you converted. Remember that everything in business is driven by money.

 5) Weekly/Monthly Website Traffic

It is an unspoken imperative to have a good, authentic, seo-friendly website for your business that you need to continuously maintain and update.

Monitor the traffic on your website and the sources that generate that traffic. Plan your actions and devote your energy to the sources that give you maximum results.

 6) Social Media Engagement

This is another important business parameter. However, few companies monitor this.
In this digital age, maximum time goes into creating content for your business account on social platforms that can help you connect with your potential customers.
Of course, it is necessary to measure this engagement. For some portals, it depends on the social platforms how much data they show you, but in most cases, you will learn the reach of the content, the number of likes, the number of comments, how many people saved your content, how many shared it and so on. Watch that traffic month by month aggregately and see if it‘s growing or declining?
Iterate with different content and see which ones work better for your audience. Put each month’s numbers on paper and visualize them, don’t just jot them down in your head.
If you only sell through platforms like this, then you should compare the increase/decrease in your engagement with the Customer Retention factor.


7) Customer engagement
This is again an important parameter to monitor how many customers have stopped using your product and how many are joining. This helps you understand whether or not your business is growing. It really is an accurate indicator of your overall service, but it takes time to develop that maturity in the numbers it represents.

8) Employee Satisfaction

Your company’s employees hold a similar importance as your customers. Measure their satisfaction or mood as it can directly impact your business success. They might add direct value to your product, which will be affected if they are demotivated. Take extreme care of their motivation.


9) E-commerce portal efficiency
If you are selling products on various e-commerce portals like amazon, Flipkart, rediff, myntra then you should monitor this parameter.
So you can measure on which portal you are getting most sales and where you are putting your energy. Since you can’t control the logic of portals, it is important to understand which portal suits your product or what changes you should make to your product content to suit a particular ecommerce portal.
If managed and studied well, this can be a game changer for your business.

At the end, there may be several parameters, analyse which one shows the true performance of your business. Measure such parameters, but be sure to collect good data before concluding anything with such parameter. Numbers without good data points will only show a skewed result, collect enough data that will give you a realistic picture.

Join Morning Club

 Ok, most of us will have read this book or heard of this book 5 AM Club by Robin Sharma. This book inspired today's post.

But I will not preach the benefits of getting up early for your lifestyle, your health, and the extra time you may have. Instead, I want to highlight the benefits to your business.

If you have an upcoming task, an incomplete presentation, a pitch deck you can't finish, a letter you want to write to an investor, a response you need to give to an angry client, not enough ideas to update the design, then sleep early and wake up early.

Don’t spend too much time on your morning routines like eating a hearty breakfast, reading the newspaper, getting groceries and milk cartons.

Instead wake up, do some exercise - if you do it daily and eat something. Start working in 30-45 minutes.

Do not waste your time in travelling, work at home, the more you lose time in the morning, the more inefficient you will become.

You yourself will find solutions to the long unsolved problems. Problems that you could not solve for a long time.

On the days when you don’t have any problems to solve, write your daily task either on the phone, notebook or in your head.

Morning time is the most effective time of the day, use it to grow your business.

Gain Competitive Intelligence



Competitive Intelligence is collecting and analysing information from competitor's landscape. It warns you of the risks involved with your products and helps you take quick decisions.

Benefits of Competitive Intelligence-

1) Helps to understand strategies of other companies selling the same product or service.

2) Makes you aware of the strengths and weaknesses of competitors.

3) Keeps you informed of developing market trends.

4) Verifies that your marketing efforts are going in the right direction.

5) Helps you predict your competitors’ business plan and next moves.

How to gain competitive intelligence?

1) Distribute surveys to people with questions related to your competitor’s product and try to find out their experience of using such products.

This way you will also learn about the demographics of your customers.

2) Visit exhibitions and trade shows to gain insights. Visit the booth of a related company and inquire about their services.

3) Buy your competitor’s product and do reverse engineering to understand the features they offer.

This practice is very common in every industry.

4) Use your network to gather such information.

5) Follow social media accounts of your competitors.

6) Never hesitate to help them when they reach out to you. Check if it is a win-win proposition.

These tactics can help you decide if your future expansion or growth plans will be successful, in line with market trends, and solve your customers’ problems.

It will also help you know what problems are not being solved by your competitor’s product.

Induce Halo Effect

 


The Halo effect is the tendency for positive impressions of a person, company, brand, or product in one area to positively influence opinions or feelings in other areas.

It was originally identified in 1907 by American psychologist Frederick L. Wells (1884-1964). However, it gained prominence  in 1920 when it was empirically demonstrated by the psychologist Edward Thorndike. He said, "It is a specific cognitive bias in which one aspect of a person, brand, product, or institution influences one's thoughts or judgments about the other aspects or dimensions of the entity." 

 He gave the phenomenon its name in his 1920 article "A Constant Error in Psychological Ratings".

The Halo effect is classified as a cognitive bias because it is defined as a perceptual error of the individual or society.

On the other hand, it is also good for business growth. It is not a false image but a perceived image due to the success of previous products of the company. 

This is also a result of stronger brand equity of the company.

All companies should try to generate this effect in the market. The following steps will help -

1) Focus on an area or demographic where your potential customers are located.

2) Market your product well, go to the extramile for your customers in the area. 

3) Be consistent in your service, solve problems

 4) Update your product and service for the needs of the market.

5) Engage with your customers on social media.

6) Give them the opportunity to be proud of using your product.

Slowly, customers in this area will begin to promote your product. This word of mouth will be the beginning of the Halo effect for your business. 

There may be other ways to bring it but the proven method is through constant word of mouth.

Go extramile for your customers

 


Going extramile, goldplating or customer delight talk about providing customers with a service that goes beyond their expectations. This helps you to make an emotional connection with them.

It develops their trust in your business and retain them until you continue to provide good and worthy services.


When should you do it?

1) In a new business it get loyal customers quickly and solidifies your place in the market.

2) If you are not able to increase your sales and you are seeing stagnation in your revenue.

3) If you want to improve your product but need real feedback from customers.


With whom should you do it?

1) With your regular customers, as they can become your brand ambassadors.

2) With the people of the new demography.


How should you do it?

1) Offer useful freebies with your product.

2) Solve their problem that is preventing them from enjoying your product or service.

3) Offer an additional feature that is expensive but useful to customers.

4) Take care of logistical problems with your product.

Keep IT Fit

 



During the discussion with his business partner, Amay tried to straighten up and shift a little on the swivel chair. This slight adjustment gave him a temporary respite from the stabbing pain that flowed down from his hips to his ankles. It was killing him during the meeting. It felt like he was constantly touching an open electrical wire. The current radiated with increasing intensity the more he changed his leg position. He remembered that fateful day after his 30th birthday when he went to the gym for the first time in his life. The doctor informed him that his muscles were too tight to perform high-intensity weightlifting exercises on the first day.

He was burning with pain as his partner asked a question. This ailment was the only thing on his mind during this business meeting. Even for health reasons, he could not cancel the meeting.

Today he no longer had the agility, the alertness, the same approach or the arguments that he had in his good days.  He couldn't help it, the doctor informed him that it will take 2-3 months for this to heal completely. So he couldn't wait and continued with this agony and suffering.

Most of us start a business when we take a step towards 30, and diseases, health problems also knock our body at the same time. The time when you need to focus all your energy on work goes into healing yourself. Blaming your helpless situation is not a solution, but I think ignorance about healthy lifestyle and easy access to unhealthy foods play a big role. 

If you want to take your business to new heights, then adopt a healthy lifestyle and become a -fitness freak.

Only a healthy mind and body can make wise decisions

There are many books in the market, and also dieticians. Check them carefully.

  Some steps that can be helpful for you 

1) Don't blindly believe in free advice of your friends. Check whether they are knowledgeable about it or not.

 2) Choose your dieticians and books carefully, you cannot bear a wrong choice. It takes a lot of time to recover

 3) Adopt only sustainable changes in your diet and lifestyle.

4) Engage in an activity that gives you an adrenaline rush. It can be sports, yoga, running, football, aanythig. It rejuvenates your mind and body.

5) Don't leave your hobby to find more time for your work. Practicing a hobby also relaxes your mind.

 6) Try to learn basic meditation exercises like Anulom-Vilom, Bhastrika. 

7) Don't believe in cheat days. Adopt something that you can do everyday.

Practice Effective Communication

 



Effective Communication is a necessary element to leave the long lasting impression on your business stakeholders. It helps to build the emotional connect with them, and can mend your business relationships in no time.

Listening, Speaking, Writing or Visual- all are different ways of communication. But, important here is how to use it with different stakeholders of business-

Here are some ways to communicate with different business stakeholders-

1) When dealing with your customer

  • Show respect for customer's opinion. Never say, "You are wrong".
  • If you are wrong admit it, quickly and emphatically.
  • Try honestly to see things from customer's point of view
  • Become genuinely interested in other people

2) When dealing with your supplying company

  • Try honestly to see things from their point of view.
  • Stimulate the competition. Throw down a challenge. Every person loves the chance to prove his or her worth, to excel, to win.
  • Never critize. 

3) When dealing with your potential customers

  • Make the them feel important, and do it sincerely.
  • Arouse in them an eager want.
  • Dramatize your ideas.

4) When dealing with other business owners

  • Avoid arguments.
  • Be sympathetic with the their ideas and desires.
  • Get them saying Yes, Yes immediately

5) When dealing with powerful people than you

  • Be a good listener.
  • Talk in terms of their interests.
  • Make them feel important- and do it sincerely.
  • Let them feel that the idea is theirs

Design product for the market needs


Do you know Apple once launched a digital camera? And it failed?

Here is an excerpt from a book I can't recommend more- The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman

"Ideas that are too early often fail, even if eventually others introduce them successfully. I’ve seen this happen several times. When I first joined Apple, I watched as it released one of the very first commercial digital cameras: the Apple QuickTake. It failed. Probably you are unaware that Apple ever made cameras. It failed because the technology was limited, the price high, and the world simply wasn’t ready to dismiss film and chemical processing of photographs. I was an adviser to a startup company that produced the world’s first digital picture frame. It failed. Once again, the technology didn’t quite support it and the product was relatively expensive. Obviously today, digital cameras and digital photo frames are extremely successful products, but neither Apple nor the startup I worked with are part of the story."

It is therefore vital for you to design your product for the market needs. Even an amazing product is destined to fail if not released at the right time.

Must follow tips to validate your product or service  viability-

1) Understand your potential market.

2) Have a deep analysis on consumer's buying pattern, their choices, demographics, and their problems with the current available product. 

3) Have a deeper insight to the problem you are trying to solve. Understand whether the potential customers are aware that they are facing a problem.

4) Perform the estimated cost-analysis for the product, and match it with consumer's buying pattern.

5) Check if the tag words for your product are trending in Google trends or Adwords. That way, you'd know if people really look out similar products.


For a small business owner, these activities might cost an investment, which I agree may not be wise to do. But, if not perfect then they can do the research at their level and progressively increase the level of research from time to time. 

At the end, what matters is awareness to these factors. I have noticed several of my friends doing business but are unaware of the market potential (in terms of numbers, not hearsay). Try not to fall under this bracket.

Before I end this post, let us look at one more product that failed because of wrong timing-

Web TV

Back in 1996, it was one of the first to offer internet services through television. But, the market was not ready, there was a lack of internet infrastructure, and it died down with time. Microsoft had to say RIP to this product.

The examples I shared are from the big, famous companies. You can imagine how many such products or services on daily basis go in their own grave. 

Conscious awareness of the market potential is the key to success.

Cyber Secure Your Business

 


When I was writing this post, 14,930,520 cyber attacks already happened that day.  If you want to check today, check it out here.

Let us look into the consequences of cyber attack for your business- 

1) Revenue Loss 

2) Loss of emails and contacts.

2) Loss of entire data in your laptop.

3) Formatting of cellphone otherwise you will not be able to use it.

4) Damage to brand reputation.

5)Loss of Intellectual Property.

If you are a small business owner, you would argue what would hacker gain from your account.  Convinced by this argument, you may choose not to invest your energy and money into it. 

But, I can only tell you this- 

What you think is what you become...If you think  to be too trivial for hackers then you will remain like that.

So first action for you is to never underestimate yourself.

I dare say, imagine an impact on your small business if this happens when you do not have a backup for yourself.

Attacked by the hackers, you would have to start and generate the entire data again. Remember that data is the key in future for everything. 

Tips for you to initiate cyber-security for your business

1) Secure your cellphone.

Most of us do business transactions now on our cell phones. Sync it with a cloud. Many clouds provide free but limited space like Gmail provides-15 GB, Dropbox provides 3gb and there are many other clouds. Choose as per your convenience.

2) Choose secure email services. GMAIL does not provide end-to-end encryption.  Look into this list of safe email providers, and decide for yourself. 

Use tools like pwned to check if your current emails are compromised? 

2) Never store your passwords in messages or whatsapp.

Purchase password managers application like Enpass and 1 Password. These applications store your password in your cloud only, so it is safe. 

3) Make yourself aware on Phising attempts by hackers -Never click on suspicious emails. Never get overwhelmed by those emails, which promises you big awards and quick money. 

4)  Most of us would have a wifi connection at home. Only a  password does not protect your internet. Check out these tips to secure your home-wifi network.

5) Have firewalls, malware protection in your laptops. Invest in such tools.

6) Avoid misuse of your Debit and Credit Card. Do not enter your credit card numbers on random websites. 

I myself once have been a victim of cyber attack. My Credit Card was used on a gaming website over the night. The transaction worth 40000 INR was done without my knowledge. I received OTPs on my phone, but never understood how that happened. I contacted the bank, fortunately within 24 hours, and bank never cleared that amount to the merchant. At the end I got my money back. I was lucky this time, not sure if I'd have the same fate in future. Better protect yourself. 

There are wallets available, which provide NFC and RFID protection. Although not sure about their efficiency, but worth to have a look.

Build your Brand




Branding is necessary because it communicates with your potential customers and talks about what your business can offer them.

The answer to these questions-
  • Why is it that sometimes a great, well-designed product doesn't sell well?
  • Why you choose Amazon over Flipkart or Uber over Ola?
  • Why do you walk 2 km to that big grocery store and ignore the nearby pops shop?
-lie in the stronger or weaker brand image. 

Brand is a perception about your product within the community. A person who has never used your product or service will also have a perception about it. This perception among people is your brand equity.

Jeff Bezos says, "Your brand is what other people say about you when you're not in the room."


Did you know that Harley-Davidson, one of the most iconic motorcycle brands, does not advertise. They believe in the power of their brand. Their customers are loyal to them and trust them.

This contagious trust should spread from your customer to their social circle.

Think about your product or service in these terms and try to understand your brand value.

Send a survey to your customers. Take notes from them on how to improve. Don't think that customers don't understand your product or business. Remember - The customer's perception is your only reality.

The following questions can help you identify actions to develop your own brand.

1) Why do you exist? What is your mission? 
2) How is your product or service different from your competitors?
3) What problems do you solve?
4) Who are your target customers?
5) Do you and your team market the vision and mission to your customers?
6) Do you consistently satisfy your customers?
7) Why should someone care about your product or service?
8) Do your old customers have confidence in your company? Will they recommend your product to others?
9) Do you look at how your competitors have built their brand?

At last, HAVE PATIENCE. A brand cannot be built in a day. Consistent efforts over a long period is necessary. TRUST your actions, keep doing your job and improving your product and service.

Find your Business Advisors




Have you ever run out of ideas for your business growth?
  • Never understood why leads weren't converting into sales?
  • You ran out of ways to improve your product.
  • Don't know what fell short in the last service you provided?
  • You want to hit your head when the customer gave a bad review without explanation.
If you are plagued by such problems, you can turn to other business owners for advise. People will be happy to help if you ask with honesty and without ulterior motives. With this, you'll also expand your network and make professional friends. 

Of course, big business tycoons might not respond, but people who have similar or larger businesses should be able to help you. They can become your advisors.

How can you reach out to them?

1) Contact them on LinkedIn. Explain your mutual interest in connecting. It should always have a win-win prospect, if not in short term than in long term.

2) Reach out to them through mutual friends.

3) Attend business conclaves, expos, or conferences. These social events are realistically like nightclubs for business owners. A convenient place to network.

4) Have social interaction with someone from big management institutes like IITs/IIMs. Alumni of such institutes are bound to have connection with startup-owners. (Ignore if you are already from there, go back to point 2).

Approach in the most humble manner. Make them understand that they are the only ones who can help you. 

5) Look out in your circle of family and friends, in most cases you can find a person from your extended family. Never underestimate your family connections. They are the ones who will help even if you are up in the air and have all egos in your body language.


In this effective way, you can hire peers as consultants without paying a penny. Every large, growing company have advisors  to guide them as they step along their path.

 Small business owners may not be able to afford, but this way you can unofficially hire your advisors.


A business without advisors can only cover partial journey of growth.
